Abstract:
At the 1906 Congress in Calcutta, Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917) declared that the goal of the Indian National Congress must be swaraj or self-rule. Naoroji's endorsement of swaraj was not a sudden epiphany -- it was the result of nearly six decades of experience and evolving thought on the reasons behind India's desperate political and economic circumstances. This talk will trace the genesis of Naoroji's political philosophy with respect to swaraj, evaluating how his opinion on the subject matured over the course of his time as the diwan of Baroda, a local leader in Bombay, an advocate of India in Great Britain, and an important figure in transnational anti-imperialist and socialist networks.

Speaker:
Mr. Dinyar Patel is a doctoral candidate in history at Harvard University. He has been conducting research in India on Dadabhai Naoroji for over the past year, working primarily with the Naoroji Papers at the National Archives of India. He is also the co-editor, along with Professor S.R. Mehrotra, of a forthcoming volume, Dadabhai Naoroji Correspondence, a collection of letters from the Naoroji Papers that is being jointly published by the National Archives of India and Oxford University Press.
