Event Details : "Landscapes" an exhibition of paintings by Ramakrishna Behera.
The paintings of Ramakrishna Behera are most certainly landscapes and are inspired by real places: the mountains and monasteries of Ladakh, the countryside of Orissa, the streets of Italy, and even the interior of the artist’s home. Yet the works employ distorted perspectives and fold in images of outer space to become something much more complex than simple landscapes. Trained as a Chemical Engineer and self-taught as a painter, Behera brings a scientist’s mind to the act of picture-making, resulting in philosophical puzzles which refer to Quantum Physics, Surrealism, Phenomenology, Psychedelia, and Cosmology.
A catalog documenting the artist’s paintings of the past eight years (2004 to 2012) has been published to coincide with the exhibition. In her essay “Time on a Canvas,” Janice Pariat comments on the artist’s process and imagery:
His paintings have been described as “psychological maps” and “hallucinatory visions” or, as one reviewer has said, “a state of flickering consciousness when the world’s myriad bits and pieces struggle to cohere in your senses.” What strikes a viewer at first sight is the dizzying content of the works, the gallery seems to have sprung cosmic leaks and black holes emerge on the walls threatening to draw everything into their dark, murky depths. It takes a moment or two to figure out what they portray, to piece together the multiple layers at which the painting functions, to adjust your sense of perspective.

Ramakrishna Behera was born in Orissa in 1977 and lives and works in Faridabad, a suburb of New Delhi. He is a self-taught painter and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Roorkee. He has participated in group exhibitions in Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and New Delhi and solo exhibitions of his work have been held at AIFACS, New Delhi (2007), Seven Art Ltd, New Delhi and Bose Pacia Kolkata (both 2009) and Bose Pacia New York (2010).
