Abstract : The retreat and decline, the recovery and regeneration of forests has been an enduring theme in India's history but perhaps has never been the subject of such extensive public attention as in recent years. Ecologists and foresters, economists and elected representatives, grazers and cultivators, Adivasi peoples and pioneer settlers each relates to forests in different, often mutually contradictory ways. While it has a government owned Forest acreage that covers over a fifth of India's land area, since the 1970s, there have been a slew of executive, legislative and administrative measures designed to check denudation and tackle ecological degradation.
Opinions vary widely on how effective these have been and why. Such debates have been greatly facilitated by the easy public availability of satellite imagery. The efflorescence of work among both natural and social scientists has also shed light on processes of forest loss and recovery. Given the concerns over land use changes in one of the world's fastest growing economies, such informed discussion is all the more vital. In this respect, the ecological and historic pasts also need scrutiny especially given the centrality of the Forest (Conservation Act) 1980 and the Forest Rights Act of 2006. The distinguished panel will open up wider questions and through a discussion help illumine an issue of increasing social significance.
Speakers :
Dr. Sangeeta Dasgupta , Assistant Professor, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University
Mr. Chandra Bhushan Singh, Deputy Director, Centre for Science and Environment
