Abstract : The history of the Mughals or the Timurids as they called themselves remains a subject evoking awe and fascination, controversy and debate among lay persons and scholars alike. Since the empire at its zenith covered well over half of modern day South Asia and extended westwards towards Central Asia, it was a major world power in its time. In symbolic terms, the Badshah remained important till as recently as 1857.
Questions are easier to pose but often provoke varied, often contradictory responses. How centralized was the power structure? What was the relation between centre and peripheries if at all these terms are valid for the 16th to the 18th centuries?  How and what was the nature of the region and what key shifts occurred in this period?
How did the revenue system or the polity relate not only to landed wealth but to trade, commerce and manufacture and how far did these links foster break up of the empire?  In cultural terms, how did the Mughals relate to diversity? Most of all how does one see the legacy of the empire long after it was a unified entity?
This is but a small sample of the kinds of issues that have engaged scholars. The NMML invites you to an afternoon of engaged discussion on a range of issues that animate Mughal historiography but with implications that go well beyond them.
