Morning 8AM, 10th May 1857
The garrison of native Indian Sepoys (soldiers) of the British East India Company stationed at Meerut suddenly attacked the British soldiers and their families in the cantonment and triggered the events which changed the course of India’s history. India had been simmering for years and on that fateful day, the Indian soldiers vented their anger against their English masters of the ‘Company’ (ie, the East India Company). The revolt spread like wild-fire in Northern parts of Indian and the rest as they say is history! For almost 15 months, hard & violent battles were fought, but finally the British Company soldiers using local help, advanced western arms & ammunition and a far better organized army quelled the ‘Mutiny of 1857’, as it was referred by the British.
Delhi was suddenly thrust into prominence in the early days of the Mutiny as the soldiers & civilians, who needed a figurehead to fight for, made the old & ailing Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar II, living in Red Fort, Delhi the unwilling rallying point for their Revolt. The battle-cry of 'Dilli Chalo' was uttered & repeated by thousands of Indian soldiers of the 'Company' across regions and Delhi, became virtually synonymous to the control that the ‘Company’ or the ‘Indian Mutineers’ had over the country.
Within few days of May, Delhi was overrun by the Indian sepoys and thereafter saw 5 months of sieges & counter-sieges, victories & defeats, terror & violence but finally the Birtish forces prevailed and Delhi was won back in September 1857.
Morning 8AM, 5th May 2012
155 years after those tumultuous times, DelhiByFoot gives you the opportunity to walk & explore the landmarks of the Revolt scattered on Delhi’s northern ridge. The walk covers mosques & old fort walls which faced heavy shelling, one of Delhi’s entry fort gates which saw pitched fighting, memorials erected in the memory of the British soldiers who lost their lives during the mutiny, British Vice-regal lodges and also monuments like a 14th century observatory named after a mysterious 'Pir Baba' & a Asokan Pillar.
We are DELHI BY FOOT a collective of 3 friends who have been walking & exploring Delhi in all its seasons & reasons, colors & cultures, festivities & eccentricities(!) for almost 10 years now and then decided that these blissful experiences must be shared with Delhizens! Imbibing elements of fun, learning, drama, tolerance & a fresh outlook towards our great city, we try to expose Delhites and tourists alike to Delhi's rich History, Heritage, Culture, Arts and last but not the least, the local Cuisines!
