The Akshara Theatre Summer Festival started 12 years ago when theatre celebrities Jalabala Vaidya and Gopal Sharman (founders of Akshara) wondered how to keep their then 8 year old granddaughter Nisa occupied with activities that were meaningful, stimulating and fun, while helping her to imbibe the art and craft of theatre and music, through her summer vacations.
Now the Akshara Summer Festival is an eagerly sought-after summertime sojourn for children and even their parents.
Conceptualised by Sharman, Vaidya and their daughter Anasuya, the Festival is five power-packed weeks of Theatre, Music, Sanskrit chanting, Dance (classical and modern both), Yoga, Art, Craft and Football. The festival includes talks, film screenings, painting and writing competitions, quizzes and performances, performances and more performances.
This year there is a special course in Artistic Gymnastics taught by Kuldeep Mawai -- National gymnast, Parkour specialist and trainer to Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh, etc.
Students are divided into three age-groups: the Junior group of 4 to 7, Middle group of 8 to 12, and Senior group of 13 upwards. Occasionally, mothers join in the Senior group too.
The Festival is held on the Akshara campus, a beautiful oasis of green in the heart of the city, with carved stone walls and wood-panelling and of course, central air-conditioning. The exquisitely beautiful theatre complex plays a large part of the childrens artistic experience.
Akshara teachers include Gopal Sharman, Jalabala Vaidya and Anasuya Vaidya, who between them teach Theatre, Music, Sanskrit chanting, Poetry and Creative Writing, Parul Mishra (Kathak), Vitthal (Kuchipudi), Sandhya Kargeti (Yoga), Mangae Ram Sharma (Art), R. Sumathy (Craft), Benny Thomas (Football) and now 20-year old Nisa (Modern Dance). Guest speakers in past Festivals have included Smt. Sonal Mansingh, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Prof. N.N. Pillai Omcherry, Krishnendu Bose, Prashant Sareen, L.H. Naqvi, Gunjan Veda, etc.
The last week of the Festival showcases performances of theatre, music, classical and modern dance and yoga demonstrations, as well as an art exhibition. Certificates are distributed to participants on the last day.
