Synopsis: The world today has proven to be unsustainable in either natural or human dimensions. Universities are today the most decisive factor for sustainable development worldwide, as they include the knowledge, science and technology, education, social concern, and so on. It is believed that some fundamental institutional changes within the universities are required for them to become the "alma mater" of a more desirable XXI century. Some Latin American experiences could highlight the nature of these changes.
Biography: Luis Miguel Romero Fernández, Biologist, philosopher and doctor of medicine, since 1977 has worked as a teacher and researcher in various universities in the world, holding various management positions. He is a former Rector of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), Ecuador, and former president of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (OUI), and former President of the American Institute of Quality Assurance in Distance Higher Education (CALED).
