Event Details : Akshara Theatre presents Rabindranath Tagores 'Gitanjali' in a contemporary theatrical version directed by Jalabala Vaidya.
Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature with his verse collection, Gitanjali, A Garland of Songs, in 1913. He had himself translated them from Bengali to English. In the century since these songs were written they were engraved on every Indian heart and continue to command towering esteem not just in India, but in countries as diverse as Hungary and Japan.
Now eminent actress and director Jalabala Vaidya presents a rare and beautifully presented stage production based on 25 verses of Tagores Gitanjali. The production features Jalabala Vaidya and Lakkan Naqvi, supported by talented young actors/dancers/singers Nisa Shetty, Shaily Priya, Dhruv Shetty, Shubham Vaish and Yashna Shetty.
The musical score for Gitanjali, composed by Gopal Sharman, is like a music symphony in itself, a perfect match to the visual and literary symphony onstage. An added treat for music lovers is a live performance by vocalist Mubarak Khan Langa and sarangi player Bundu Khan Langa. Child artist Iqbal Langa dazzles with both his musical virtuosity and acting skills.
Jalabala Vaidya, who is best known for her solo tour de force performance in Gopal Sharmans The Ramayana which has been performed on Broadway, the West End, the Smithsonian Institution, United Nations Headquarters and all over India brings alive the majesty of Tagores poetry, conveying both the poetic sweep and delicate detail that make Gitanjali a treasure house of literature.
Her young cast of supporting actors excel in their roles and have recently won great critical and audience acclaim in Akshara Theatre productions of The Ramayana, The Strange Case of Billy Biswas and India Alive, The Musical.
In Rabindranath Tagores Gitanjali, the poets haunting words of striving for union with divinity are brought to life by the emotions and nuanced feelings of Jalabalas deft direction and Gopals exquisite music.
