Abstract : This paper looks at the relationship between urban space, colonial law and Christianity in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Madras. It argues that the vision and practices of urban rule shaped the ways in which low and outcaste inhabitants of the city made claims as urban communities and entitled subjects of the East India Company.
Speaker : Dr. Aparna Balachandran is Assistant Professor of Modern History in the Department of History, University of Delhi.
