Mr. Suvojit Bagchi (Senior Journalist),
Mr. Prakash Singh (Former IPS Officer)
Mr. Sumanta Banerjee (Reputed author and veteran journalist)
Abstract : The panel focuses on issues raised by the so-called ‘Maoist insurgency’ in central and eastern India and particularly on aspects that are discussed in the anthology More than Maoism: Politics, Policies and Insurgencies in South Asia, to be published in 2012 by Manohar of New Delhi for the Institute of South Asian Studies, Singapore.
The title – ‘more than Maoism’ – captures the thrust of the book: the bloody clashes involving security forces, ‘Maoists’ and civilians have causes deeper and more complex than ideological adherence to the doctrines of Mao Zedong. The panel aims to identify and evaluate the importance of such causes and to speculate about how peace and progress might be achieved.
Speakers : Suvojit Bagchi has been a correspondent with the BBC World Service since 2004 and a journalist for more than 15 years. He has reported from all over India and spent more than a month with Maoist insurgents in Chhattisgarh in 2010. His account of this experience forms a 45-page section of the More than Maoism book.
Sumanta Banerjee, a former journalist, is the author of the classic In the Wake of Naxalbari (first published 1980 and many subsequent editions) and a number of other books. He is a political and civil rights activist, translator of Bengali books into English and a frequent contributor to scholarly journals and periodicals.
Prakash Singh has been Director-General of Police for Uttar Pradesh and commander of the Border Security Force. He also served in Nagaland, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir. A recipient of the Padma Shree, he is the author of The Naxalite Movement in India (New Delhi, 2010; first published 1995 with many subsequent editions).
Robin Jeffrey is Visiting Research Professor at the Institute of South Asian Studies and Asian Research Institute, National University of Singapore.
