PANCHA TATTVA Concept Note:
As is written in the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad, God is identified as the source of the great elements: Some wise men say it is inherent nature, while others say it is time — all totally deluded. It is rather the greatness of God present in the world by means of which this wheel of brahman goes around. Who always encompasses this whole world — the knower, the architect of time, the one without qualities, and the all-knowing one — it is at his command that the work of creation, to be conceived of as earth, water, fire, air, and space, unfolds itself.
Pancha Tattva is a Sanskrit term referring to the Pancha Mahabhutas, the five elements described within Hinduism, Budhism, Jainism and Sikhism with which all cosmic entities are created. Within various Vaishnavic streams, these are considered the five aspects of divinity, the five pure lights or the five substances of Tantric Puja. Prithvi (the earthly or gross material), Jal (water, the liquid material), Agni (the fire, combustibility or transformative energy), Vayu (the air or gaseous matter) and Akash (space or the ethereal material).
From the beginning of human intelligence, man has wanted to understand various natural and physical phenomena via reason. From the caveman to the more evolved agrarian man, the connection between vegetation, animal kingdom, the earth, the diurnal cycle and natural forces has been sought. Various cultures have various beliefs but they all appear co-axial. Central to the various belief systems is the cycle of generation, germination, destruction and dissolution of the Panch Tattvas in an eternal cycle. Empedocles in ancient Greece attributed every sentient and gross object to be made of earth, water, air and fire. Aristotle in 4th century BC postulated four components of cosmic construction adding a fifth, ether to it. To represent these, he added a square within square encompassing ether, the earliest symbolic representation of the five elements.
The Five Elements were divined as Wu Xing in Chinese philosophy; the five stages, the five steps or the five movements of cosmic energy. These were wood, fire, earth, metal, water. Each movementwas ascribed a primary color and so came about the theory of coloration in ancient Chinese Art. Each primary color was used to represent a distinct manifestation of cosmic force.
A similar thread runs through Jain miniatures, Buddhist Thankas, Tantric Art and Kabalistic diagrams. From the Moderns to Contemporaries, Indian artists have experimented with this philosophy to create their artistic idiom. From geometrical abstractions of J Swaminathan and KCS Paniker to the tantric art of G R Santosh, one can see a subliminal attempt to create a harmony of the Panch Tattvas.
