Abstract : A Lutheran church was established at Tranquebar (a Danish factory south of Pondicherry) under the German missionaries Ziegenbalg and Plutschau in the first decade of the eighteenth century. The members of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge (S.P.C.K.) at London, August Hermann Francke at the University of Halle, and some officials of the English East India Company were instrumental in bringing this about. At Tranquebar the German missionaries opened Tamil, Portuguese and Danish medium schools, where they, along with a few local teachers, taught Protestant Christian doctrine and trained the children to read and write in these languages. These schools represent the first attempt by those associated with the Protestant Church to engage with non-Christian communities.  The success of these schools and such initiatives encouraged the S.P.C.K. and the English Company to consider opening similar schools in Madras and Cuddalore. However, this expansion was viewed with a certain degree of scepticism by the English Company’s chaplains, who were expected to play an important role in leading the new initiatives. The chaplains were comfortable with their established responsibilities—attending to the needs of the English and other Protestant inhabitants of the English port factories. This resulted in   apprehensions about the viability of the new projects, delay in their implementation, and the expression of diverse perspectives on the issue, as is evident from the letters exchanged between the Company officials, the chaplains, the S.P.C.K. and the Lutheran missionaries in Halle and Tranquebar. This paper seeks to map this debate on the objectives and requirements for the establishment of a Protestant mission in the east, with particular focus on the role played by English officials.

Speaker : Mr. Mahesh Gopalan has recently submitted his doctoral thesis at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His primary area of research has been Protestant Missionary in Madras Presidency.
