The nature of language is mysterious and paradoxical: it conceals as it reveals, it creates as it destroys, it distances as it connects. ‘Text’ is a codified form of expression, based on a system of signs and signifiers, with symbols that represent each word, syllable and letter. When written, these letters contain a shape and form; when spoken, they carry a certain rhythmic sound and character; and when strung together in a deliberate order, they assume a concept, a meaning and an effect.
Words: A User's Manual is an all-text-based show that seeks to turn a text-object into an art object, questioning the truth and deceit of language, bringing the world of criticism into the world of art. Can art criticism and art exist in the same space? How can art--inherently a medium sans language--be created with language? What is the potential of text to transcend the two-dimensional medium of paper and assume the role of an image, an object, a sound and a body? Conversely, does the arbitrary nature of words amount to not much more than nonsense?
