Event Details : 'A Sand Castle Model Home Family' Japanese film screening.
Shuhei Kido is a typical office worker living in an apartment complex with his wife and three children. For them, like most urban middle-class dwellers, owning a home of their own is an impossible dream.
One day, however, an unexpected chance arises that may give the Kidos a chance of owning a superb house. A real estate company is looking for an ideal family to live in one of their model houses for a year. After that, they will receive the house and land on which it stands. It is a campaign and there are conditions attached. They must show it to prospective clients. The Kidos apply and to their great delight they are accepted. So they start to lead an ideal family life in the model house - but it doesn't take them long to realize that it is a performance, with the strong and autocratic Miss Tsuda constantly there to make sure they perform. They are inundated with visitors: curious housewives, mindless young couples, old people with nothing better to do and grumbling applicants who didn't make the grade. They are also targets of crank calls and jealousy all around. The children are bullied at school and Shuhei is criticized by envious colleagues at the office. In various ways each member of the family feels intimidated and abused.
One day, Kido can take it no longer and tends his resignation and leaves. His wife is desperate and although at first she tries to keep up the pretence of being an ideal family, finally gives in and with her children moves to a small apartment and gets a job. Kido has disappeared and eventually becomes a tramp.
The second son, Sota, falls in with a bad crowd which takes delight in attacking vagrants. In one such incident, he finally realizes the tramp he is attacking is his own father. In an emotional scene, they are finally reconciled.
