Event Details : A discussion with Prof. Richard Davis, Professor and Chair of Religion and Asian Studies at Bard College and author of Lives of Indian Images On his current project on 'The Reception of the Bhagavad Gita in 20th century India'.
Prof Richard Davis is author of Lives of Indian Images (1997) and editor of Picturing the Nation: Iconographies of Modern India (2006).  His most recent publications are A Priest's Guide for the Great Festival: Aghorasiva's Mahotsavavidhi (2010) and Global India circa 100 CE: South Asia in Early World History (2010). His current project on the Bhagavad Gita will examine the 20th century reception of this text; its emergence as 'the book' of Hinduism in the nationalist period; the subsequent building of Gita Mandirs and Bhavans as well as its presence in visual culture.
