Event Details : Imogen Heap performing live.
Imogen Heap is a Grammy Award-winning English singer-songwriter, composer and an uber tech-savvy musician from the London borough of Havering. She has released three solo albums, of which the last one, Ellipse (2009) was a chart success in North America. She is currently working on her fourth studio album and has released two tracks since March 2011 with a third one coming up in September.
This quirky multi-instrumentalist who is classically trained in instruments including piano, cello and clarinet is also known to mix ambient sound into her music (like the sound of the frying pan in use). Integrating these samples into her music, Heap is composing one track over two weeks every three months. The first track from this album, ‘Lifeline’ was released on March 30 and was followed by the second song, ‘Propeller Seeds’ released on July 5.
Heap has taught herself sequencing, music engineering, sampling and production (on Atari computers), has also taught herself to play the guitar and drums, and subsequently two percussion instruments, the Array mbira and the Hang. Therefore, Heap’s debut album iMegaphone (1998) was a mixture of self-penned and self-produced tracks, alongside tracks co-written and produced with established producers such as David Kahne, former Eurythmic Dave Stewart and Guy Sigsworth.
Her debut album was followed by a known collaborative project, Frou Frou in partnership with singer-songwriter and composer Guy Sigsworth. Together the musical duo cut an album titled, Details in 2002 as Frou Frou, and went on to record singles for movies like Shrek 2 and Garden State. Heap’s solo work has also appeared in TV shows such as O.C., Grey’s Anatomy and CSI NY, and in films like The Chronicles of Narnia.
She is not only known for her music and her distinctive sense of style, but in the online world too, Heap has a powerful digital reputation with over 1,533,000 followers on Twitter, with more than 40 million plays and over 3,50,000 friends on MySpace and over 8 million views on You Tube for ‘Hide and Seek’, the standout single from the album Speak For Yourself. She has maintained a very strong bond with her fans ever since she started spearheading the DIY music movement around the release of her second album, Speak for Yourself (2005). By creating her own record label and dispensing the need to go to a record label, she won the support of her fans, Grammy nominations and half a million record sales. The Guardian titled her ‘the first download diva’ shortly after this rise to the top in the online world.
