Event Details : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to the Seminar on ‘Medieval Hagiographies and the Process of Sant- Sufi Interaction’.
One of the important features of twentieth century nationalist historical writings on the religious movements in medieval India is the nationalization and secularization of the connections and parallels between the sufi and sant movements. The interaction between the two movements is seen as an important building block in the making of India’s national ‘composite culture’. It is believed that the medieval sufis and sants evolved a synthesis of the ‘two religions’ (i.e. Hinduism and Islam) by developing emotional piety and disregarding the ritualistic and sectarian sides of religion.
An attempt has been made in this paper to critically examine the validity of the syncretistic arguments about the sufi-sant interaction in medieval India. Drawing on a rich and diverse corpus of hagiographic texts, the paper seeks to chart the complex process of interaction between the medieval sufis and sants, and more importantly, between their respective followers. During the course of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the followers of the sants and the sufis established a pattern of relationship that contained elements of both competition and triumphal assertions of superiority on the one hand, and mutual appropriations and accommodation, on the other.
