Join us for a screening and discussion of a feature documentary, Ganesh, Boy Wonder with filmmaker and artist Srinivas Krishna. Shuddhabrata Sengupta will introduce Srinivas and his work.

Ganesh, Boy Wonder : Shot in Hyderabad and in Sarnia, a town near Toronto, the film follows the journey of a poor family after their son, whose facial deformity makes him resemble the elephant-headed god Ganesh, becomes a media sensation. The film captures the remarkable story of Krishna and Jayamma, a working class Indian couple who prayed to the god Ganesh to bless them with a boy, never dreaming that their son would actually look like his namesake, the elephant-headed deity. Years after giving up all hope of finding medical help, an accidental meeting with a reporter’s brother leads to a national television story on Ganesh’s facial deformity. The resulting media sensation draws the interest of India’s rich and powerful, and a Canadian plastic surgeon, Dr. Sanjeev Kaila, who changes their lives forever.

Srinivas Krishna launched his career in 1993 with the international hit Masala, establishing him as “one of the most talented and provocative directors working in North America today,” according to The Critical Guide to Contemporary Directors published by Wallflower Press, London. Masala premiered at the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals, was distributed worldwide and, in 2002, was voted by the the British Film Institute among the Top Ten South Asian Diaspora Films of the 20th century. His second feature, Lulu, had its world premiere in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Krishna’s work -- which includes television dramas, documentary and dance films, large scale media installations, stage plays and opera  --  reflects upon and plays with contemporary dislocations of identity and experience. "In any work I do, I keep coming back to the formal challenges—and pleasures—of communicating the quality and structure of experience, the intense subjectivity of how we feel versus the objective reality of our actions and social identities. The friction between the two creates, for me, a great deal of drama, comedy and mystery in our lives today." He lives in Toronto with his wife and son.
