Koyama Shoko leaves the hospital with the doctor's prescription that her emotional Instability Is nothing marriage couldn't fix. Already past the age a "good" Japanese woman should marry. Shoko is dragged to a marriage interview the very next day with Kishida Mutsuki, a 30 year-old doctor. The two don't seem to hit It off until Shoko bursts out crying, recalling that her favorite dog died that morning. "Maybe I'm crazy; she says. “I’m gay'' Mutsuki casually responds. An unlikely couplet the two marry in part to satisfy their worried parents, and settle into what to others must seem a normal life. Although Mutsuki, upon marrying Shoko, had broken off his relationship with his lover Kon, a young college, student, Shoko begins' going out of her way to bring the two back together again. Almost In response, Mutsuki asks Shoko's friend Mizuho to find his wife a lover. But as Mutsuki begins seeing Kon more, Shoko only starts drinking more heavily, revealing to Kon one day that she, like him, needs Mutsuki. On her Instigation, the three go to the beach where, after an enjoyable day, Shoko abruptly runs Into the sea. With Mutsuki also wet from saving Shoko, the three, as if symbolizing their new relationship, divvy up the clothes Kon Is wearing and spend the night together in the same bed.
Their unusual relationship is exposed when Shoko's parents learn of Mutsuki's homosexuality from Mizuho. Shoko's parents blame Mutsuki and Mutsuki's demand he break up with Kon, but the two insist things are fine as they are. Still, Shoko contemplates pleasing her parents by giving birth through artificial insemination and Mutsuki asks Kon to severe their relationship. Taking a late-night drive with Mutsuki and Kon, Shoko, in a state of total emotional confusion, jumps from the car and runs into the night. Collapsing in the middle of the road, she is greeted in the morning with the delightful sight of Mutsuki and Kon arriving in the car to take her home.
