Exhibition, Book & DVD Launch
Art Alive Gallery & The Taj Mahal Hotel presents ‘The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City by The Singh Twins’ featuring an exhibition of selected Collectors Edition Giclees and new body of digital mixed media original artworks by The Singh Twins which explores the artists’ creative connection with the city of Liverpool where they have lived and worked most of their lives. Represented is the diversity of themes for which they are known - from politics to pop-culture, multi-cultural history and society - as well as their creative development as artists, as the exhibition also showcases their first animation (the award-winning ‘The Making of Liverpool’) which brings to life one of the artworks on display. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book launch of The Singh Twins’ new publication ‘The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a city by The Singh Twins' and the launch of their DVD (titled, ‘Art in Motion: The Making of Liverpool’) which features the animation film and bonus interviews that offer an insight in to the making of the film, the Twins’ influences, working practice and ongoing relationship with India an Indian art.

About the animation -  ‘The Making of Liverpool’:
This 13 min, semi-autobiographical animation, which is written, directed and produced by The Singh Twins represents a turning point in the artists’ creative career - as they apply the contemporary Indian miniature style for which they are known, to modern mediums of digital technology and film. It brings 800 years of Liverpool’s history to life through an animated exploration of one of the Twins’ best-known public commission paintings (‘Liverpool 800: The Changing Face of Liverpool’), which was officially unveiled to Prince Charles on the occasion of Liverpool’s 800th anniversary in 2007.  The animation won the Creative Media Award at the Spinning Wheel Film Festival, Hollywood where it was described as “brilliant and magical” by editor of Oscar winning films, Kate Amend. It was also nominated for the Short Film Award at London’s Tongues on Fire Film Festival.

About the book - ‘The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a city by The Singh Twins’.
This, spectacular coffee table book profiling the art of The Singh Twins is published by Twin Studio in partnership with North West Development Agency, Merseytravel, Liverpool City Council and the Indian arts organization Milapfest. Lavishly illustrated throughout, it incorporates some of the Singh Twin’s earliest and previously un-published works and includes an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside’s Angela Heslop, which amongst other things, highlights the Twins personal and creative relationship with India. Other chapters explore the artists’ creative processes; offer a ‘behind the scenes’ look at their award winning animation film, ‘The Making of Liverpool’, and reveal Liverpool’s rich history, achievements and changing identity through a detailed exploration of their ‘Liverpool 800’ painting.

About the Exhibition: ‘The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a city by The Singh Twins’.
The exhibition is inspired by and compliments the key themes of the book and DVD - expressing something about the Twins’ personal pride in and creative relationship with their home city of Liverpool on the banks of the River Mersey, in a way that celebrates their strong Indian roots. In addition to a selection of Collectors Edition Giclees depicting some of the most famous paintings from their personal touring body of work and private and public commissions, it incorporates a series of new mixed media original artworks, titled, ‘Mersey Miniatures’ that presents a surreal, ‘Indian infused’ vision of Liverpool through a style combining modern creative digital media and traditional painting techniques.

Speaking about The Making of Liverpool exhibition, book and animation DVD launch, the Singh Twins say:
“We are delighted to be able to present this body of Liverpool inspired work to Indian audiences. It’s not just about celebrating a region we think of as home in the UK but about showcasing how the people and heritage of India - a place that will always be home in our hearts, have impacted on and continue to contribute to histories, cultures and societies outside of India.
Though born and brought up in the UK, traditional Indian heritage and values have always been a strong force in our lives - informing both our personal and creative development. As we hope the ‘Making of Liverpool’ exhibition, book and DVD will show”

About the artists : London-born artists, The Singh Twins, have effectively personalized the language of Indian and Persian miniature painting to depict the complex urban and domestic landscapes of the contemporary world. The sisters who look and sound exactly alike, insist that their collaborative practice is not simply an innocent expression of an affectionate bond between sisters, but rather a self-conscious criticism of the post-Enlightenment tradition of singular authorship and the cult of the individual. Wittily describing their work as ‘Past Modern’ (as opposed to Post Modern), the Twins engage through their works with various crucial, critical debates - challenging existing stereotypes and redefining generally accepted narrow perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society. Combining elements from Western and Eastern aesthetics they assert the value of traditional and non European art forms to the continuing development of Contemporary Art practice, heralding a unique genre in British Art and initiating a new movement in the revival of the Indian miniature tradition within modern art practice. This year their achievements in this respect received formal recognition at the highest level of the British establishment when they were each awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours “for Services to the Indian Miniature Tradition of Painting”
The Singh Twins have been invited to speak on their work at institutions such as the Tate Gallery, London; The Smithsonian and Library of Congress, Washington; The Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada; the National Museum of Modern Art in Delhi and Mumbai and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco.
The books ‘Twin Perspectives’ and ‘Worlds A-Part’ have been published on their work. Recently, a new book, ‘The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City’, was released in UK and is due to have its US launch in November. Amongst numerous media appearances The Singh Twins have featured on BBC’s Womens’ Hour, Mid Week, Front Row and Belief; CBC’s Here And Now and the Granada TV documentary Singh Out Sisters.
In 2002 their Arts Council England, British Council & Air India sponsored, solo, touring exhibition of India opened at The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, which -until Anish Kapoor’s exhibition earlier this year - made them the only British artists (besides Henry Moore) to have been offered a solo show at this premier Indian venue. In 2005, a retrospective show of their works from 1987 – 2005 was held at The Walker Art Gallery, one of Britain’s prestigious National Galleries. And in 2010, their highly successful solo show was hosted at London’s National Portrait Gallery.
Amongst The Singh Twins’ major public works are two paintings commissioned by Liverpool City Council (celebrating Liverpool’s 800th birthday in 2007 and its status as European Capital of Culture in 2008) and EnTWINed - a piece commissioned by The Museum of London which explores the Indian Mutiny (or, First War of Indian Independence) and its impact on Modern multicultural Britain.
The film on their work, ‘Alone Together’, by Arts Council has been awarded ‘The Best Film on Art’ at the Asolo International Film Festival in 2001. In 2006 they completed their first film, Nineteen Eighty-Four and the Via Dolorosa Project – a short documentary on the making of one of their most famous works, Nineteen Eighty Four, which has been screened at film festivals internationally.
The Singh Twins are also published authors and film makers. Their writing includes books such as Bindhu’s Weddings and Images of Freedom as well as numerous articles for magazines, journals and websites both in the UK and abroad.
