Event Details : The School of Arts and Aesthetics is pleased to invite you to 'Masculinity, ethnicity and sexuality' a talk by Girish Shahane.
Girish Shahane is a prominent art critic and commentator on cultural matters. A columnist for Yahoo India and a former editor of Art India Magazine, he is a freelance writer based in Mumbai, who administers the presitigious Skoda Prize for Contemporary Indian Art. Shahane is the curator of the upcoming exhibition Home, that will open at the Devi Art Foundation on 27 August. Among the places he has lectured or presented papers are NCPA and NGMA in Mumbai; Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore; Indian School
of Business, Hyderabad; Tate Modern, London; Wesleyan University, Middletown; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
In this lecture he compares depictions of Indian men and accounts of masculinity in the subcontinent with representations of European and African maleness. Through the comparison, his talk will reveal deficiencies in the currently dominant academic viewpoint which considers masculinity purely a social construct. The talk wil draw on a wide range of examples from art, literature, advertising, cinema and cricket in making an argument against postcolonial theory.
