Even Details : Seven Art Limited Gallery showcases ‘Two Positions Part II’ by Siddhartha Kararwal & Yamini Sharma.
Seven Art Limited Gallery showcases the art works of two young contemporary Baroda based artists Siddhartha Kararwal and Yamini Sharma titled ‘Two Positions Part II’. They exhibit large-scale sculpture and installation works, composed of non-traditional and low-tech materials.
Siddhartha Kararwal shows several works which are based on the idea of hybrid and deviant cultures. By recreating a monument to the Maharaja Sayajirao in soft white T-shirts that had been donated to poor Indian communities by an American charity but somehow made their way onto the open market, repleate with their luxury labels, he comments on both the ability to manipulate the significance of a historical sculpture (rather than reading it as a period piece) as well as the deviating cultures of commerce. Another work made in paper and wax comments upon the historical lineage of Gujarati Shaadi bands and the way in which their outward appearance and identity has been formed through a series of appropriations, resulting in a hybrid of historical meanings.
The works by Yamini Sharma are made of foam, fabric and other soft materials stretched over wire armatures, conjuring up organic forms and processes. Abstract in form, the works are often representative of the artist’s visceral response to events and things she observes in the world. Her installation of elaborate suspended sculptures in brights reds and black which are lit from within reference both insectivorous plants, such at the Venus flytrap, beautiful yet dangerous, as well as refering to the womb or a place of birth and creation. By layering these different meanings and points of reference, the artist speaks about the power of beauty to delude and the mysteries of life and death.
