Event Details : 'All About Our House' Japanese film screening.
Koki MITANI, the creator of 'WELCOME BACK. MR. McDONALD' presents a new film, ”ALL ABOUT OUR HOUSE". Taking time off from a string of theater hits, Mitani tackles the universal story of a couple who undertake the monumental and petty challenges of building a new house. Mitani’s original screenplay draws oh his personal misadventures in construction, when he and his wife undertook to build a house for themselves. The story is rich with references to the profoundly human challenges inherent in the process of making home.

Synopsis : NAOSUKE, a screenwriter in his mid-30s, dreams of building a home to share with his wife, TAMIKO. The couple have enlisted YANAGISAWA, a rising star on the interior decorating scene, to realize their vision of a chic house perched on a leafy bluff. Though Yanagisawa has never designed house before, the couple have chosen him for his cutting edge aesthetic and his grasp of international architecture. Naosuke has coaxed Tamiko into using her father, IWATA, as general contractor. Although Iwata is known for sturdy meticulous construction, the truth is it's been awhile since he actually built anything. Delighted at the chance to help his daughter, Iwata quickly rustles up his old crew.
Yanagisawa and Iwata are both possessed of splendid talents, but the edgy designer is woefully ignorant of actual construction techniques. The veteran builder is flummoxed by the young designer's new-fangled architectural lingo and his own antiquated crew definitely shows some senile tendencies. Yanagisawa is intent on creating a fashionable, open, American-style house while Iwata is hell-bent on creating a solidly traditional Japanese home. Yanagisawa will sacrifice anything to his creative vision, but Iwata's professional pride brooks no construction delays. The only thing the two men have in common is a dogged stubbornness. Trapped in the crossfire, Naosuke stumbles between them in search of any compromise. He knows his authority is on the line, but he is powerless before the battling professionals...
From the Ground-Breaking Ceremony, to the house-blessing and a celebratory open house party, the film unfolds through long-cherished Japanese rituals of house-building. Iwata and Yanagisawa's bickering, Naosuke's pathetic, fumbling and the endless stream of unasked-for advice are sharply etched in Mitani's inimitable comic repartee. This wry comedy will warm the hearts of home-owners and human beings everywhere.
