CHILANGA, the anklets tied for a dance performance has its own significance in dance. This small accessory is not just a part of the costume and adornments of the dancers rather its sound reverberates and helps the artist keep pace with the rhythm accurately while performing.
A gurukul for art & culture, which was established in 2007 started out in the name of Chilanga at Shiva Shakti Mandir, Sectro-8, R.K. Puram, New Delhi. Training in Indian classical dance Bharathanatyam is imparted in the guru-shishya parampara in the style of Kalakshetra by Smt. S.S. Nair, a proficient artist of this dance form from Thiruvananthapurm, Kerala. She is a disciple of Smt Girija Chandran, an exponent of this dance style as well as the founder of the popular art institution Regatta Cultural Society at the Capital of Kerala. Smt Nair is a qualified diploma holder from this institution.
CHILANGA first started with a batch of 13 students. Today, it has disciples from diverse regions and cultures varying from age group 6-22 years. The other performing art forms taught here are Folk dances, Mime & Theatre.
