Celebrating the harvest festival with prayer, genda phool and food
Description : Baisakhi named after the Indian summer month of Baisakh is a popular harvest festival celebrated all over India, known variedly in different states. It also marks the beginning of the New Year and is especially important for farmers. Baisakhi is also a very important Sikh festival since it was on the day of Baisakhi in 1699 that Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru established the Khalsa Panth (Sikh brotherhood).
On this occasion, we will walk you to some of the historic Gurudwaras (sikh shrines) of Delhi, which are traditionally the centres of prayer and festivity on this auspicious day. We will listen to shabad kirtan (Sikh devotional hymns), and enjoy karah prasad (a sweet preparation served in Gurudwaras) and langar, a community offering of food.
Needless to say, our beloved genda phool will be an inseparable part of this celebration. As part of the walk, we will also visit the Fatehpuri phool mandi (flower market). The historical flower markets of Delhi are slated to soon be history, since the government of Delhi is relocating all the flower markets of Delhi, in a very myopic vein. We must pray for the flowers!
