Event Details : Studio Aakaar presents 'Pracheen : Cultural Expressions In Old Silver' exhibition cum sale of old handcrafted silver heirlooms.

Jewelry has been part of Indian civilization since ancient times. Recall the famous dancing girl of Mohenjodaro? This little figure of worldwide fame wears a necklace and many bangles much like our indigenous people living in many parts of India. These ornaments, made largely of silver, attest to a time when men and women, whether they were royalty or common people, wore ornaments to indicate their wealth and wellbeing. But, ornamentation was only one of the reasons for the creation of jewelry. For example, did you know that a toe-ring or an armlet had the additional purpose of stimulating those body parts that would aid blood circulation? Or that geometrical shapes and carvings were used as sacred mandalas that had their own spiritual energy? Whatever be their use, these lovingly handcrafted silver ornaments were coveted by people for their beauty and value. Today, however, silver is viewed as just another metal to be wheeled away by unscrupulous traders and melted for its price in weight. Moreover, due to a variety of reasons, machine-made, mass produced silver items (or look-alikes) have taken over the market, displacing the traditional silversmith for whom his metal was only a medium to express his creativity. Therefore, in order to place silver within its cultural space and give importance to genuine craftsmanship, Studio Aakar brings you Pracheen, an exhibition cum sale of old handcrafted silver. In a world where one hardly gets to see genuine old silver ornaments, this exhibition acquires special significance. It is a never-before collection of necklaces, pendants, earrings, anklets, bracelets, bangles, rings, belts, hair ornaments, foot and hand ornaments and even silver shoes! The exhibitions is curated by Nirupama Verma who heads Studio Aakaar. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh. Studio Aakaar was started by film and theatre artiste, Nirupama Verma in the early 1990s to promote silver ornaments. “This exhibition is pure shringar in silver, a veritable collector’s delight, a wonderful legacy for the next generation,” says Nirupama.
