Event Details : Solo Show of Jenny Bhatt.
Seven Art Limited Gallery presents the Solo Exhibition of Jenny Bhatt, a well-known artist living in Mumbai. Her current work, the MokshaShots series, titled Episode 6: ‘Liberation through Consumption’, explores the consumerist myth that fulfillment (Moksha) can be found through the purchase of a product or an experience promised by it. It is a suite of satirical works that critique urban consumer culture focusing on the means by which art, spirituality, media and emotion have been commoditized.
Inspired by the traditional Thangka or Mandala painting used as an aid during meditation. Jenny says, “in my larger paintings, this process has been likened to how brands create gods out of products, people and experiences into objects of contemplation for the consumer. This eventually leads to the consumer’s mind space being conquered by them. The imagery is in the process of being extended to several forms of aesthetic practice- interactive work, a graphic novel, film, art objects and new media.”
Aside from the paintings and works on paper, the artist will also show an interactive video that employs the same elements of critique. Bhatt believes that the digital interactive work examines consumerism in daily life and makes the users examine the choices they make and the motivations behind these choices. It looks at the operation of ecommerce and puts the audience through the processes of online transactions, while showing up the hidden agendas of its practitioners.
About ‘Liberation through Consumption’ : The concept of MokshaShotsTM was first introduced in her work in a solo exhibition in Mumbai in 2008. In Indian philosophical thought, ‘Moksha’ means salvation. A MokshaShotTM, as defined by Jenny Bhatt is a taste of the Sublime. Each individual can make his own MokshaShotTM out of anything they find fulfilling – art, a chocolate brownie, sex, a film, a vacation or a tequila shot. Consumerism is the new secular religion. Consumers like to venerate people, commodity even consumerism itself.
