SHARANYA CHANDRAN, Bharatanatyam Dancer
Daughter and disciple of (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran, Sharanya was born into Bharatanatyam. From the tender age of 4, she began learning both from her mother and Guru K.N. Dakshinamurthi.
Nationally graded, Sharanya has performed both as a soloist and also as part of the Natya Vriksha Dance Company, and has travelled widely for performances, including the Lincoln Centre in New York and the Thai Cultural Centre in Bangkok. Sharanya has also traveled all over India accompanying Geeta on performances and for lecture-demonstrations for SPIC-MACAY. Sharanya is also part of Geeta’s creative dance choreographies, and has been involved with several change-performances on issues of gender, drugs, peace and harmony.
Sharanya is also trained in nattuvangam by Geeta Chandran and has accompanied her in performances all over the world. She also assists Geeta in teaching at Natya Vriksha.
An economics graduate from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, Sharanya was Cultural Secretary of the College Union. She holds a Masters degree in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, which she completed as an INLAKS scholar. Sharanya is currently working as Researcher in India’s Planning Commission.
She aspires to balance her academic career as a development researcher with the classical dance she so loves.
