It is ironic that the right to personhood continues to challenge the women’s movement in South Asia. Emphasizing women's right to identity, dancer Geeta Chandran in this performance titled PANKH presents new narratives that bring alive the dilemmas of women attaining their personhood.
Presented through traditional lyrics and contemporary poems (including Maya Angelou’s iconic poem, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings), PANKH, according to the dancer, attempts to challenge social mores that repeatedly attempt to confine women to an identity of VERBS and ADJECTIVES. “Her” inner desire to become a NOUN, becomes the recurring leitmotif of PANKH.
