Event Details : James Beveridge Media Resource Centre, AJK MCRC, Jamia Milia Islamia invites you to the screening of ‘Talking Heads [Muslim women]’ A Documentary by Ms.Fathima.N.
About the film : The film ‘Talking Heads [Muslim women]’ is a satirical response to the way mainstream media constructs the identity of Muslim women as homogenous ‘victims’. The filmmaker who herself is a Muslim woman is deeply troubled by this image and sets out to make a “positive film about Muslim women”. Her attempts lead her to three characters in East London- a painter, an aspiring politician and a community support worker. Each character has her own unique take on how she deals with the Muslim identity. Z, the “friendly voice of God” narrator of the film views the filmmaker’s interactions with her characters with a fair amount of cynicism. Z is sceptical about both the filmmaker and the working practices of documentary, like the need for ‘good sound bytes’ which can lead to a ‘bearing of the soul’ for the benefit of the audience. The film reveals how the subjectivity of the filmmaker influence the film in such a way that the film is as much about its maker as it is about the subject. By satirizing the filmmaker does ‘documentary efforts’ through Z, the film points to the need for a critical audience who will interrogate rather than absorb the images thrown at them by the all know mainstream media
About the filmmaker : Ms.Fathima.N is a young filmmaker who is interested in experimenting with the documentary form. Her previous films are Living ‘my’ Religion and The Making of Travails of a Rickshawala. She is an alumnus of AJK MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia and Goldsmiths. She is a recipient of National Geographic’s All Roads Seed Grant.
