Up your Christmas Evening with the Sounds of Soothing Jazz by Devika Bhise
Details of the Artist : Devika Bhise, born In 1991, and brought up in NYC has been immersed in the pursuit of the arts since the age of 5. A trained Bharata Natyam dancer, and vocalist in the Hindustani vocal music style, she continued with Acapella singing as a Soprano, jazz and opera vocals along with voice lessons. She studied the piano for 9 years, acting and singing in lead roles in productions like Bye Bye Birdie (role of Rosa Alvarez); Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore; Les Miserables (role of Fantine) ; Little Shop of Horrors (role of Chiffon); Partition (role of Namagiri); T.S. Eliot’s The Cocktail Party (role of Celia Copplestone). She has performed on several stages like Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and others and is at home on stage. Having acted in two films The Accidental Husband By Griffin Dunne (starring Uma Thurman) and Anamika by New York Film Academy, she ventured to direct her first documentary film Hijras the Third Gender, which won the Best Social Documentary Award in the Los Angeles Film festival and was screened at Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival and The India Habitat Center, Delhi.
Devika is currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University. She is the recipient of the Hodson Trust Award for academics and the Woodrow Wilson Research Award for research in Sanskrit and Western Theatre. Devika belongs to the Screen Actors Guild and plans to pursue a career on Broadway and the arts. She is grateful to be able to share her passion for music through this concert to garner support for this heartwarming cause.
The following are the accompanying artists of the band;
Ben Rosenblum was born and raised in New York City. He studied classical piano, theory and technique from the age of three, and jazz piano, composition & improvisation from the age of ten.
Recently, he won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award for musicians under 30, and the Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Original Song.
Babush Santana is a legendary violinist and he also plays the trumpet & the drums. A graduate in violin from the Trinity College of Music, London. He has the honour of being the only band to have represented India on four occasions at "Jazz Yatra"- the International Jazz Festival.
He has arranged and composed for the stage productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, My Fair Lady, Matilda, Starlight Express, which include his own compositions and arrangements & the magnum opus Les Miserables among many others.
Joseph Vessoaker a renowned musician in the Mumbai circuit. He plays the Trumpet with the leading Bombay Chamber Orchestra and Bombay Salon of Music. Besides the trumpet Joe can also play instruments like the clarinet, guitar, keyboards, trombone, encomium, French horn, tuba, sax and flute.
