The monarch sentences the nobleman to death in an iron maiden, after calling upon a surgeon, Dr. Hardquannone, to disfigure the boy's face into a permanent rectus grin. As a title card states, the King condemned him "to laugh forever at his fool of a father". After few years, while summoned by the king to leave England, Dr Hardquannone and his fellows "comprachicos" - a sinister band of children-abductors – abandon Gwymplaine at night on the Cornish coast. Later, caught in a raging storm, which they think is due to their misdemeanor, the comprachicos will throw into the sea a bottle containing the story and the origin of the Man who Laughs.
