Giving art and design a functional perspective Seven Art Gallery Presents the Guillotine Series by Vijai Patchineelam. His series consists of large format monochrome oils, black, white or gray, on paper.
Guillotine Series are more about repetition and the subtleties of the activity and how routine goes about changing things slowly without one having to force his own necessities into it. This repetition develops and sediments depth with every incorporated event; be it intentional, half hearted or a mistake.
Seven Art Limited Gallery’s aspiration in search of an artist whose intellect and the ability to express through the work engages an audience to have a dialogue with the work itself finds a pace in Vijay Patchineelam’s work.
His other part of the work is dedicated to Photography used as means of documenting site-specific work that happens inside the studio. It is because of the transitory nature of most of these works, photography is used to depict and exhibit them inside a gallery.
He believes that these attempts to organize objects are failed attempt, which tries to achieve some kind of control over what surrounds him. Just because he sees them as failed attempts it does not fall under of his interest to simulate or transcribe them into a gallery, the perfect and immaculate white walls would only aggravate their failures. These works sustain themselves in the walls of the studio, they are meant to be there and cannot be separated.
About Vijai Patchineelam : Vijai Patchineelam completed his MFA in Crafts and Design from Konstfack University College of Arts, Stockholm, Sweden and BA in Industrial Design from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began working on this series in early 2008 at his residency in Kochi, India. Speaking of the initial days of his work he recalls of the time when there were certain elements forcing him back to paintings. But he decided , that he would try not to force his desires into paintings and instead would let the random events or mistakes take lead.
Some of his previous works include “Frame Series” at Bombay Art Gallery. Mumbai, India, “Ovdje Se Slovom Nitko Ne Bavi” at AKC Medika. Zagreb, Croatia, “Abre Alas 6” at A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, “Moment as Monument” at Thomas Erben at Travancore Palace. New Delhi, India , “Trajetórias em Processo” at Galeria Anita Schwartz. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, “Back, Fourth and Round About”at Thomas Erben Gallery.
