16th and 17th September : Ancient Indian Terracotta Art - 16th to 17th September 2010
This series of lectures delves into the importance of these extraordinary objects as one of the core foundations of Indian visual culture. They look at issues of mass-production in Ancient societies, the dissemination of religious iconographic models and objects that reveal that art in Ancient India was not merely sacred
To be delivered by Dr. Naman P. Ahuja, Associate Professor of Indian Art and Architecture, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University

1. From Protohistoric to Post-Mauryan Terracottas and Minor Arts; their Legacy on ‘Gupta’ styles and imagery
2. Questioning the historiography of Technology & Mass – Production; Chronology & Styles; Material religion

A Pantheon Rediscovered? The Problems in Decoding the Major Iconographies and Narratives
3. Ancient Indian Goddesses, their rituals & their shrines
4. Symbolic & Talismanic imagery
18th September :
Can we Posit a Date for the Development of Indian Visual Aesthetics?
5. The origins & development of Erotic iconography
6. Performativity & Mood
The lectures are accompanied by an exhibition (collaboration : IGNCA) of photographs from Dr. Naman Ahuja’s archive.
