Event Details : 'Map Is Not The Territor' an exhibition of paintings by Sujith SN.
‘Map is not the Territory’ showcases the recent works of Sujith SN in dry pastel, mixed media and watercolour on paper. Sujith S N had enrolled himself in the army, but soon found he was not meant for the regimented routine. However his brief employment in the construction industry and the systematic training has left their imprint on both the themes and the formal tendencies of his work. Skillful deployment of watercolor besides other mediums gauges the intensity of atmosphere, air, light that comprises the location of event in capture. Sujith’s landscapes are vast expanses of bleak shapeless urban terrain with sudden outcrops of structures such as factories billowing smoke, warehouses and towers, in miniature form scattered at random distances. Such spaces engender an unease occupying the human mind amid dizzying prospects of unplanned growth, the inevitability of diffusion and the resulting alienation as well as the anxieties of migration – all typical of the murky depths of contemporary urban society.
About the artist : Born in Baroda in 1980, Sujith SN spent his formative years in Gujarat before his parents settled back in Palakkad in North Kerala. Sujith completed his BFA from the Fine Arts College, Thrissur and went on to pursue a MFA in painting at the SN School of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad in 2007. 'The City and the Tower' was his first solo at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai in 2008. Sujith’s recent shows include 'Indian Subway' at Grosverner Vadhera Gallery, London (2010); 'Earth' at Gallery OED, Kochi, India (2010). Sujith has been the recipient of awards that include the Kerala Lalit Kala Academy special mention award, 2004; Kerala Lalit Kala Academy state award, 2005; ACK Raja award, 2005 and the Merit Scholarship, University of Hyderabad, 2005.
