Event Details : Art Alive Gallery presents Nandita Chaudhuri’s ‘Retinal Residue’’  An exhibition of paintings, sculptures and installations.
Art Alive Gallery is pleased to present a show titled ‘Retinal Residue’, which exhibits some of the recent series of works by artist Nandita Chaudhuri. The artist, has been residing in London for the past fifteen years, and seeks to investigate the various binaries which surface in her works, owing to her cross cultural roots.  The show which will host her paintings, installations, as well as sculptures, is largely abstract in nature.
Nandita Chaudhuri holds an MA in Visual Arts from the Camberwell University of London, and a Post-Graduate diploma in fine arts from the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Besides that she also completed a Foundation in Fine Arts from the Slade School of Art, London, Painting & Sculpture from Central Saint Martins, London and a Restoration and Medieval Art course from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
As an Indian artist residing and working abroad, Nandita’s work has been enthusiastically received by the audiences as well as many of the esteemed art institutions. She holds an endorsement from the Royal Academy of Arts (London), which described her works as being transnational with an exceptional confluence of British and Indian influences. In September 2009, her works were exhibited in the London Underground Poster show, at the Gloucester Road Station. More recently, she has been invited to participate in one of London’s biggest public art exhibition in 2010, which will see Sotheby’s auctioning the works, in aid of a wildlife conservation project.
Nandita, who calls the show, Retinal Residue as “…..an amalgamation of large instinctive works rather than a repetitive and studied methodology.”, believes that it is a central concern which binds a body of works together rather than any stylistic orientations. In Nandita’s works, especially in her drawings of the female nude there is a strong feminist slant, which departs from any aspects of the sensual towards that of a raw, primordial force. She moves away from any formal fixations to an aggressive application of paint leaving her works open ended with no previously thought out definitive form. In addition, the show will also feature some of her sculptures in which she extends the concerns reflected in her paintings. They comprise of soldered together parts of kitchen utensils and discarded bicycle parts.
Of the works featured in the exhibit, there are two installations comprising of paintings, which draws their influences from the miniature format. In one of them, small kitsch-like images of gods and goddesses are found juxtaposed alongside found objects such as pieces of colored glass. With these works Nandita seeks to subvert the commoditization of religious deities, which the kitsch and the popular art movements had heralded – by employing those very tools of representation. She further emphasizes this reversal with the bright reddish-orange of the background, so reminiscent of the saffron color used for deities at the roadside shrines.
In the other series of the same size, she brings forth paintings where she aligns images from old Bollywood posters, alongside objects and materials which are a humorous spin from words associated with the Indian film industry, such as ‘tinsel-town’ and ‘stardust’. Remarkably playful and tongue-in-cheek in nature, they will remind the viewers of manner in which those films captured the nation’s imagination, and continue to resonate within their sub consciousness.
In addition, Nandita holds various shows and participations to her credit, such as the Florence Biennale (2009), Vyner Street Gallery (2009), London, Frieze Art Fair(?), Lapidarium National Museum – Common exhibition project of Czech Baroque Foundation and Brooks Gallery, Prague (2009), the Art Prague Fair, Prague(2009), Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London(2009), Special Commission–Auction – Grand Prix – France, Monaco ( 2008), Visual Arts Gallery, Delhi ( 2008).
Nandita lives and works in London.
