  • Entry : Tickets @ Rs. 500, Rs. 300, Rs. 200, Rs. 100 available at Kendra.
  • Event Info : Shriram play by Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra. A celebration of Ramleela before Dussehra which is on 21st October.
  • Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra enters its 51st year of the presentation of the story of ‘RAM. At the time when ‘RAM’ was first performed in 1957, there were practically no dancers in Delhi and had to be specially brought from Kolkatta and Kerala. Today it is a matter of pride that perhaps almost every school in Delhi – of which there are hundreds – have dance teachers who have performed in this production.
  • The production that you are about to witness is not an instamatic creation. It is the evolution of five decades of the best creative inputs in terms of choreography, music, lighting, costumes and sets which has resulted in the spectacle of the ‘Shri Ram’.
  • The story of ‘Ram’ represents universal truths and a way of life which is exemplary. These include concepts such as the determination of Hanuman to grow in stature to complete his task of reaching Sri Lanka, the acceptance of Shabari’s fruit setting an example against discrimination of caste and creed, the Laxman Rekha being a subtle reminder of the pitfalls that may follow transgression amongst many others. The Ramayan thus becomes a way of life as opposed to a complete sub-servience to radical belief.
  • It is heartening to note that this year’s production features an international cast as also a double cast. The Sita is from Indonesia, Surpanakha from Sweden, the Golden deer from Mongolia and Keikeyi from Bangladesh.
  • For the Kendra’s Ramayan it is a wheel of Dharma and Karma which play an important role. When Ram is banished to the forest, there are greater forces at work. Dashrath has his own karma to answer to for when he was young, he had killed Shravan Kumar and was cursed by his blind parents.
  • The central theme of our production is the sacrifice of freedom for the sake of honour and duty. This manifests itself as a set of principles governing human behaviour such as Ram’s duty towards obeying his father’s command. These might seem oppressive in a modern society yet they embody a spirit of service which may best be defined as love towards sentiment that demands service. Each character in Ramayan exemplifies the ideal of relationship in service - Hanuman as a devotee, Lakshman as a brother, Sita as a wife.
  • It is gratifying for the Kendra that this production was the first production to be performed on the stage of the internationally acclaimed Bolshoi theatre in USSR in 1977.
  • On an annual basis, the Kendra infuses this production creatively in order to lift the presentation of one from that of blind faith to newer horizons – yet not deviating from the message of this great epic.
