Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Cities in History’ series) on ‘The City is History: New Indian urbanisms and the terrain of the law’ by Prof. Janaki Nair, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Abstract : The long gestation period of the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC)  by the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) allows for speculations on the realigned terrain of the law as an instrument of urbanisation.  For the last two decades, the court has unambiguously placed its immense power and rationality at the service of capitalist transformations of space. This is in contrast to the past, when it also provided space for critical opposition to the spatial chaos of capitalism.  Using the prism of these recent court judgments, the speaker would like to ask: what new urban form is the law obliged to bring into being? Is the city as we knew it a thing of the past?

Speaker : Prof. Janaki Nair is Professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her recent published work includes The Promise of the Metropolis: Bangalore’s Twentieth Century (2005) and Mysore Modern: Rethinking the Region under Princely Rule (2011).
