Event Details : Seven Art Limited Gallery presents “Retellings” by Baaraan Ijlal and Pritika Chowdhry.
Baaraan Ijlal’s series at Seven Art Limited Gallery titled ‘To be continued’ is dedicated to those who want to connect. The characters of Arabian Nights return with clues to reunify a disintegrated world. Invoking the differentiated traditions of Arabic fable … to be continued explores the idea that the dialogue should never cease. Like Sheherzade’s narrative, it has to continue … to keep the humanity going.
Speaking about her current innovative work on Almirahs, Baaraan Ijlal said “these are not closets …They are canvases with doors. There’s inside and outside. All parts are open and accessible _ in default. These lives of others can be watched. ''Third parties'', ''outsiders'' please approach DIRECTLY”.
On the other hand, Pritika Chowdhry explores cultural forms of memory and history through her creative practice. “I am interested in creating material objects that can function as containers of memory. The primary focus of my art practice is large-scale sculptural and site-sensitive experiential installations. I think of my works as “memory sculptures,” an eloquent term coined by cultural scholar, Andreas Huyssen. Transnational in scope, these works function as mobile and temporary memorials.” says Pritika Chowdhry.
Creating bridges is one of the primary motivations that sustain her creative practice as an artist, curator, and scholar. Often her starting point is deep research in a particular historical event or events of contemporary significance. Her creative practice now is a symbiosis of research, studio practice, and curatorial projects. She believes that as a cultural producer, while she definitely has a specific and situated location, she also has the ability to create empathetic bridges with people and communities from other locations. In 2007, she founded the Transdiaspora Project, an ongoing series of curated exhibits that seek to bring together artists from multiple diasporic locations around overlapping themes.
