Post Event Coverage of मज्झिमा पटिपदा - the Middle Way at Jawahar Bhawan

Glimpses of मज्झिमा पटिपदा - The Middle Way, a dance drama on the life and message of the Buddha staged on May 23rd at Jawahar Bhawan by Bhagyam Arts & Ideas. Written, designed and directed by Suranya Aiyar. Dancers Swarnali Kundu and Akash Mallick depicted scenes from the life of the Buddha in a Bharatanatyam- Kathakali duet. The music was composed by renowned Delhi-based Carnatic exponent Vidushi Sudha Raghuraman.

Suranya played the role of Sutradhar. She regaled the audience with stories from the life of the Buddha, his various teachings and nuggets of history from India's Buddhist age.

A highlight of the show was the Sri Lankan-inspired Thuranga Wannama depicting the grief of Prince Siddhartha's favourite horse Kanthaka, at his final renunciation. Another highlight was the raging elephant Nalaagiri and his pacification by the Buddha.  The show included depictions of the birth of the Buddha, his spiritual journey leading to his insight of the Middle Way, the celebrated courtesan Amrapali who became a Buddhist nun and Emperor Ashoka's espousal and propagation of Buddhism.

It was a multilingual presentation with Suranya Aiyar giving her presentation in Hindustani and English, with quotes from Buddhist texts in Sanskrit and Pali. The presentation was accentuated with beautiful pictures of Buddhist monuments, carvings and paintings from North and South India.
