Event Description: Portals, by W.I.P Labs, explores alternative, experimental, and critical art. Acting as a gateway into new, uncharted spaces, it provokes a deeper reflection on the challenges we face today.

Portals symbolise transitions, transformations, and crossings between different states or dimensions of human experience and understanding. Whether as allegorical gateways to enlightenment, phenomenological engagements with the world we exhibit, or deconstructive challenges to traditional boundaries, Portals serve as a rich metaphor offering insights into the lived experiences of today.

Thematic programming brings Portals to life, with each month showcasing a new artistic expression through workshops, performances, talks, and exhibitions curated by W.I.P Labs.

December 2024 Programme Highlights

Programming in December ventures into the world of political uncertainty and how the artists respond in music, film, theatre and dance. This month's theme focuses on the practice of creating Art In Uncertain Times.

Uncertainty is a feeling of collective anxiousness which is dealt with within the confines of daily mundanity. This is a plateau where an artist brings complexities of political uncertainty, easiness of social justice, the evil of oppression and need for hope with their art. Art In Uncertain Times aims to illuminate the responses of these artists, and a need for acknowledgment from the public.

Theatre Performance: Usar | A play by Third Space Collective

Usar is a play set in an ICU waiting room where 4 caregivers sit and wait for impending death. Set against the backdrop of a failing healthcare system, the play chronicles the lives of these strangers as they attempt to find hope and connection in a cold and bleak room.

About the Collective

Third Space Collective (TSC) is a group of theatre practitioners attempting to create contemporary and experimental work about the times in which we live. The last 10 years have seen the collective produce a series of productions and programs to take theatre to communities that make up the city. They are engaged in facilitating workshops, curating performance laboratories, producing work for other groups and creating performances. Underpinning their creative work is the willingness to drastically reimagine performative forms and narratives, in an effort to speak to the socio-political canvas they occupy. TSC thrives on taking creative risks, pushing boundaries, and defying conventions to offer audiences a fresh perspective on the world we inhabit.
