15th August, Tuesday,

On this 70th anniversary of India, let us take you back in time to those days, to help you experience I-Day celebrations in the most unique way possible, by a hands-on experience of an erstwhile royal sport, from the highest rooftops of Old Delhi.
Oh yes, nowhere in the city, is kite-flying so synonymous with 15th Aug celebrations, nor can you see it being pursued with so much passion than in Old Delhi- The Walled City of Shahjahanabad area!
From the late-Mughal era, the flying & fighting contests using kites, or "Patangbaazi" was one way of expressing joy & happiness, on any public occasion....be it religious festivals, a joyous event like birth of a royal prince or be it the anniversary of crowning of the popular Badshah (Emperor).
Hundreds of 'Patangbaazi Ustaads' or expert kite-flyers kites would engage each other in intense battles of 'air-supremacy', while both the rich patrons, who would sponsor these contests, and the rest of the townfolk would cheer-on these Ustaads as their colorful kites playfully danced across the blue skies. The air would come alive with screams of excitement as supporters of one Ustaad tested his skills of kite-flying against another and eventually when one Ustaad would get the better of his rival & cut away his kite, a loud cacaphony of joyous cries would erupt from the victor's terrace!!!
