‘Journey from the Mahabharata to the Mughals’

According to legend the ancient city, Indraprastha from Mahabharata, on the banks of Yamuna is the same site on which the 16thcentury Mughal capital city, Dinapanah was built by Humayun. One of the well-known forts of Delhi, this rectangular fort is spread over nearly two kilometers with thick ramparts, three gateways, surrounded by a moat and structures such as a mosque, library, stepwell, bathhouse, etc. Popularly known as Old Fort or Purana Qila, excavations have revealed ancient relics, terracotta figurines, inscribed seals, utensils, monks’ cells, coins and so on, dating from the Mauryan era to the early Mughal era so the fort has seen many modifications and additions in this long span of history. A major tourist attraction, the complex houses an archaeological museum displaying a collection of artifacts, hosts a light and sound show in the evenings about Delhi and its seven major cities and also has boat riding in the lake outside the fort. Let’s take a walk inside this royal fort!
