Technology as well as the expansion of open-access and open-content models of knowledge production have made possible a serious rethink of the current structures of academic publishing.
New Text is located within this moment of possibility. We believe that an independent press that is not motivated solely by commercial profit can create a viable and sustainable alternative that promotes public knowledge, even as it recognises and rewards the labour of authors and academics.
Following a short introduction, there will be a panel discussion with speakers including, Satish Deshpande, Lawrence Liang and Aditya Nigam.
The first two New Text titles under the Firsthand imprint, which will publish original books by emerging as well as established authors, will be launched. These are Akhil Katyal’s The Doubleness of Sexuality: Idioms of Same-Sex Desire in Modern India and Akshay Khanna’s Sexualness: Law, Epidemiology and the Queer Movement in India. The two authors will be in conversation with Lawrence Cohen.
Two titles from the Comebacks imprint will also be launched. These are Meena Menon and Neera Adarkar's One Hundred Years One Hundred Voices: The Mill Workers of Girangaon—An Oral History and Satish Deshpande's Contemporary India: A Sociological View. These digital publications ensure the continued circulation of key, classic and canonical texts (that may have already or may soon go out of print) and ensure that they remain in the public domain. These editions will also add, through a commissioned introductory essay, an interpretative layer that brings the ideas in the text into conversation with current concerns.
