The three German films in this edition of Open Air Film Night narrate stories of three different shades of foreignness; the feeling of being a foreigner and alien relationships. The protagonists could not be more different – an Alzheimer’s patient who is becoming a stranger to himself; a woman who has migrated from East Berlin who is trying to put her past behind her and finally a refugee seeker in Germany who has to hide and disown her body and sexuality by assuming a male identity until she falls in love.
Screening Schedule :
17:00-19:19
Head Full of Honey (Honig im Kopf)
Directed by: Till Schweiger (Germany, 2014, Colour, 139 mins, German with English subtitles)
Head Full of Honey is a story about the love between Tilda and her grandfather Amandus, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. As Amandus’s condition deteriorates after the death of his wife, his son Nico convinces him to move into the family home. Through a series of incidents (humorous, for the audience at least) that leads to the breakup of the family, it becomes clear that the family cannot take care of Amandus. Only the eleven-year-old Tilda can deal with him and his disease with a kind of humour and sensitivity that makes it easier to approach Amandus when he is lost in his new world. When Tilda’s parents decide to move Amandus to a nursing home, Tilda kidnaps her grandfather and helps him fulfill his last big dream – to see Venice again. A very special adventure begins: An eleven-year-old girl and a seventy-year old Alzheimer’s patient are on their way to Italy…

West (Westen)
Directed by: Christian Schwochow (Germany, Colour, 102 mins, 2013, German with English subtitles)
The summer of 1978: Nelly Senff, a postgraduate chemist, and her son Alexej relocate from East to West Berlin. A feigned marriage to a West German has made the move possible. After the death of Nelly's boyfriend and Alexej's father, she hopes to start a new life in the West. But first the two end up in a refugee centre and the German bureaucracy, with its string of questionnaires, is not the only thing that wracks their nerves. The Secret Service, and most of all the CIA, are very interested in the reasons for Nelly's exit from East Berlin – and even more so in her presumed dead boyfriend Wassilij, who may be operating as a double agent. To secure a future, the woman must first put the past behind her.

Unveiled (Fremde Haut)
Directed by: Angelina Maccarone (Germany/Austria, 2005, Colour, 100 mins, German with English subtitles)
Fariba, a translator living under the threat of the death penalty in her own country, Iran after being revealed to be homosexual, is able to flee Germany. While being in the refugee detention centre in Frankfurt her application is turned down after which she attempts to claim asylum in Germany on political grounds, as she is too ashamed to reveal the truth about her sexuality. In an unexpected turn of events, a young Iranian man whom Fariba has befriended commits suicide, and she is able to assume his identity.
After she is released from the detention centre in the guise of Siamak, she begins work in a cabbage factory in Germany where she tries to fit in with her masculine co-workers, whilst trying to disguise her true identity. She then meets Anna, a co-worker, and the two soon fall in love. What follows in this love affair is a series of events that prompt both the characters in the film, as well as the audience, to question the integrity of their relationship, as well as being a foreigner in your own body.
