Event Description :  DANCE : Utsav-Ranjana's Odissi Dance Academy presents "Nal- Damyanti" Odissi and Chhau style

Nal- Damyanti is a unique dance-drama produced in two traditional styles of dance, Odissi and Chhau. The mythological story of Nal and Damyanti finds mention in the epic Mahabharata. It recites the tale of noble King Nal who despite his righteous beliefs succumbed to temptations of playing dice and lost his entire kingdom and more so, he loses himself.

This story has immense relevance even in today’s world where temptations beckon and aim to mislead. The saga of Nal - Damyati aims to awaken the inner consciousness of the common man through the powerful emotive manifestations of dance and the retelling of their own loss and anguish.

Smt. Ranjana Gauhar, is an internationally renowned and acclaimed artist of the traditional Odissi genre of Indian classical dance. She is the recipient of numerous honours including Padmashree Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the President, Government of India.

With the conceptualisation of Nal - Damyati, Smt. Ranjana Gauhar has created a one of its kind production that merges dance with animation, ushering in a new attitude and a fresh style of presentation of an ancient art form.

Nal - Damyanti will have a completely animated background set where the dancers will interact with the Computer Generated (CG) environment. The one of a kind dance drama will also have numerous animated characters that will move and interact with the CG environment and the performing dancers. Nal - Damyanti is an animated movie that comes alive with exquisite live action and dance sequences.

As the Founder-President of Utsav- Ranjana’s Odissi Dance Academy, Smt Ranjana Gauhar has nurtured, guided and built the organization which is counted amongst the leading cultural organizations of the country. She has provided a platform for its cultural credibility through teaching and multi-cultural activities for the last 29 years. Several leading artists, young talents and people of the cultural fraternity have participated and showcased their art on this national platform.

Utsav continues concertedly and relentlessly to delve into the realms of the rich traditions of cultural creativity and art to enrich, strengthen, and instill pride in the Indian ethos.
