Event Description : "West Bank In New Delhi: A Theatre Journey" a talk by Sudhanva Deshpande.
What does freedom mean, beyond the realm of a nation? How is it interpreted by a theatre group from a fettered and occupied land like Palestine? What happens when this theatre group collaborates with an Indian one that specializes in street theatre? What are the perspectives, learnings and discoveries born from this convergence of different cultures, contexts, and concepts of freedom?
The story of The Freedom Theatre, Palestine and Jana Natya Manch (Janam), New Delhi began in January this year, when these two diverse theatre groups reached out to each other to collaborate and create a joint production. For this, The Freedom Theatre decided to relocate its school of 6 students to India to undergo training in street theatre, and Sudhanva travelled to Palestine to understand more deeply the nature and need of this unique collaboration. And thus, the two groups embarked on an incredible journey into theatre - a journey which is still evolving and discovering itself.
Sudhanva Deshpande will share fascinating stories and insights from his experiences in Palestine, and with the people of The Freedom Theatre. He will talk about the journey of theatre-making and creative expression - emphasising how experience, ideology and discussion are being kept open and yet, are coming together to constructively impact the final artistic piece.
About the speaker : Sudhanva Deshpande has been with Jana Natya Manch (Janam) since 1987. He has acted in, directed, and helped evolve dozens of street plays, numbering a few thousand performances. With Sanjay Maharishi, Sudhanva has directed two documentary films on Habib Tanvir and Naya Theatre.
He is a core team member of the India Theatre Forum, as well as its capacity-building training programme, SMART (Strategic Management in the Art of Theatre). He has held teaching positions at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, and AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.
He has taught, led workshops, lectured and performed in several countries. He works as editor with LeftWord Books and uses the bicycle as his default mode of personal transportation in Delhi.
