Event Description : "Renewal" A Special PIX issue on Afghanistan
PIX: A Photography Quarterly will be launching Vol. 12 – a special issue on Afghanistan titled Renewal – with an exhibition on October 23. Through this issue, PIX will seek to understand photography’s role in evolving visual histories that run parallel to news media, in a country where documentary and evidence photography have more likely been the predominant forms. Can current visual developments shape the way we explore Afghanistan’s changing social fabric? Through Renewal, PIX explores the more local imaging traditions and personal narratives with a generation that today faces a brutal past but is willing to freely engage in dialogue with the rest of the world.
The issue will include lead essays by Rahraw Omarzad and Farzana Wahidy (also on the Advisory for this issue), featuring the works of Asad Hussain, Hamid Soltanabadian, Lorenzo Tugnoli, Lukas Birk & Sean Foley, Majid Saeedi, Morteza Nikoubazl, Mujaheda Khowajazada, Mustafa Quraishi, Sandra Calligaro, Shamsia Hassani and Sumit Dayal.
Contributing writers for this issue are Taran N. Khan, Francesca Recchia, Mujib Mashal, Nazes Afroz, Moska Najib, Jemima Montagu and Shakila Azzizada.
