Synopsis: Dara, the play, relives the conflict in Mughal India of the mid-seventeenth century during the struggle of succession among the sons of Emperor Shah Jahan, and deals with the evolution of his eldest son, Dara Shikoh, into a remarkable scholar and thinker of medieval India.
The play begins with Dara’s own desire to succeed his father as Emperor, and the competing passion within him to venture into the realm of spiritual enquiry. In the latter, he was inspired by the great Sufi saint, Sarmad. His untiring study, his work on the translation of Hindu texts into Persian, as well as his development as a poet and philosopher, made him quite oblivious of what it takes for a Mughal prince to ascend to the Peacock throne. Dara, having always lived in the comfort of imperial palaces, is no match for his younger brother, Aurangzeb, a shrewd military strategist with years of experience fighting in the Deccan. A devout Muslim strong in his faith, Aurangzeb had the fortitude of a conqueror and the determination to become emperor.
In parallel with the aspirations of the brothers are the two sisters, Jahanara and Roshanara, who, without families of their own, ally themselves with different brothers to find their individual purpose.
Mir Yekshatur understands everyone’s inner conflict. His interlocutor is Chatur Janab, voicing the wisdom of the common people. Aurangzeb succeeds in taking both Dara’s crown and life from him. And later, the life of Sarmad. Even so, Dara’s life was one of extraordinary endeavour and achievement, a life dedicated to promoting respect for all human faiths. In this is the final crowning of Dara Shikoh, the Philosopher Prince.
