Event Description : "Inhabited Pasts: The Many Lives of Monuments in Delhi" Workshop to discuss the habitation of monuments.
This one-day open workshop will discuss the habitation of monuments in Delhi. In an attempt to depart from the notion of the monument as a physically static and socially-sterile edifice, this workshop will consider monuments as social and spatial canvases; providing shelter, solitude, the possibility of privacy and romance, devotional and commercial opportunity. Papers were invited that
explore a range of issues associated with the permanent and transitory habitation of monuments in the city, now and in the past.
How are monuments animated by social interactions, negotiations and conflicts? The definition of the monument may include sites subject to legislated protection as well as structures that are part of localised registers of memory and history. How do occupants conceive of their rights to and within
the spaces of the monument? How do conservation authorities respond, both in disciplining the ublic at a monument and in attempting to uncouple the monument from its immediate physical and social environs?
This workshop is an opportunity to consider alternative conceptions of monuments and of heritage that may owe more to the understanding of these structures as places of popular resort, than to the cultural precepts of modern conservation practice.
Papers will be 25 minutes long to leave time for discussion.
Confirmed speakers include: Sunil Kumar, Delhi University | Surajit Sarkar, Ambedkar University, Delhi.
Organised by: European Consortium for Asian Field Study (ECAF), Lancaster University, South Asia Institute (SAI) and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan.
